The Very Slow Wind from the Pulsating Semiregular Red Giant, L2 Pup
نویسنده
چکیده
We have obtained 11.7 μm and 17.9 μm images at the Keck I telescope of the circumstellar dust emission from L2 Pup, one of the nearest (D = 61 pc) masslosing, pulsating, red giants that has a substantial infrared excess. We propose that the star is losing mass at a rate of ∼3 × 10 M⊙ yr . Given its relatively low luminosity (∼ 1500 L⊙), relatively high effective temperature (near 3400 K), relatively short period (∼ 140 days), and the inferred gas outflow speed of 3.5 km s, standard models for dust-driven mass loss do not apply. Instead, the wind may be driven by the stellar pulsations with radiation pressure on dust being relatively unimportant, as described in some recent calculations. L2 Pup may serve as the prototype of this phase of stellar evolution where it could lose ∼15% of its initial main sequence mass. Subject headings: circumstellar matter –stars: mass loss

The light curve of the semiregular variable L2 Puppis: II. Evidence for solar-like excitation of the oscillations
We analyse visual observations of the pulsations of the red giant variable L2 Pup. The data cover 77 years between 1927 and 2005, thus providing an extensive empirical base for characterizing properties of the oscillations. The power spectrum of the light curve shows a single mode resolved into multiple peaks under a narrow envelope. We argue that this results from stochastic excitation, as see...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملPulsating Variable Stars in the MACHO Bulge database: The Semiregular Variables
We review the pulsating stars contained in the top 24 fields of the MACHO bulge database, with special emphasis on the red semiregular stars. Based on period, amplitude and color cuts, we have selected a sample of 2000 semiregular variables with 15 < P < 100 days. Their color-magnitude diagram is presented, and period-luminosity relation is studied, as well as their spatial distribution. We fin...
متن کاملThe light curve of the semiregular variable L2 Puppis: I. A recent dimming event from dust
The nearby Mira-like variable L2 Pup is shown to be undergoing an unprecedented dimming episode. The stability of the period rules out intrinsic changes to the star, leaving dust formation along the line of sight as the most likely explanation. Episodic dust obscuration events are fairly common in carbon stars but have not been seen in oxygen-rich stars. We also present a 10-μm spectrum, taken ...
متن کاملLong Secondary Periods and Binarity in Red Giant Stars
Observational arguments supporting the binary explanation of the long secondary periods (LSP) phenomenon in red giants are presented. Photometry of about 1200 semiregular variables with the LSP in the Large Magellanic Cloud are analyzed using the MACHO and OGLE photometry. For about 5% of these objects additional ellipsoidal-like or eclipsing-like modulation with the same periods as the LSP is ...
